Open World Particles - OWP for Gamemaker studio
A downloadable tool for Windows
This is a tool for game maker studio 2! It is not a game or a tool to use by itself.
What does this tool, Open world particles, do?
Well, if you've ever made a top down game you might find yourself wanting to make some particles in that game. And if you do then you might find yourself wanting to assign those particles depth, via a system.
Question though, what if you have a really big game? You can't just make infinite layers and moving a few layers to match the screen in a rigid sense completely destroys the depthing of existing particles.
So... I came up with OWP. I have no idea if someone else has already made a similar thing (it's not super complex anyways!) but basically it allows you to create particles (however you like) at a position and with a depth and then move around however you like and have the particles still be there and at the correct depth when you come back. Very neat!
It does this by essentially wrapping particle systems along the screen as you move, preserving all the relative information as it "turns over" while still being fast and convenient.
There are options for accuracy and some utility functions so you can configure the systems reasonably well.
Once you have it installed you have to add the manager object to your game, configure it to the basic set up, and call the scripts related to it to create particles with the system. You can make the scripts however you want as long as they eventually target a particle system in the manager. This will make sense once you see it, hopefully. (;
Note, this doesn't support rotating cameras and it only "kinda" supports scaling/zooming cameras. My use case was fixed camera top down games, if that's you and you want a simple way to depth some particles then this might be the tool for you.
Secondary disclaimer, this tool is still somewhat WIP. I've used it for a few games since making it and it's had no issues however it may still have to bugs here and there. It's only a couple hundred lines of code so you can probably rework it yourself if you'd like but message me on the GM discord if you have questions.
