HexKanji
A downloadable game
Hello-
This is a "game" that I made over the course of a few weeks, then updated over some months, to assist myself with studying Japanese kanji in a very simple, point and click way.
I personally prefer when my studying is highly dense, just lists of words or collections of definitions. I'm not a fan of everything you do in some language apps having animations and limited control over what words you see at what times. I like to have it all laid out in front of me and be able to choose what to focus on myself.
If you are like me then you may enjoy this program, it's designed to give the user as much information as possible while still allowing for fine details and focus on specific words in a "decent" looking ui. The visuals and polish have been improved since the screenshots and video were made so it will look a bit different now.
The game has a few modes, control will switch you to "gallery" mode which simply shows you the meanings without quizing or you leave it as default to get tested every time you click to a new tile. You can also type or click to interact with the quiz and ui. This game does have furigana, as well, so pronunciations are available above example sentences for all 13000+ sentences. (A feature that I myself love, now that it's in. (: )
There are filters for difficulty and the map is infinite (well, not quite (; You can see what's outside of the border-) and random so you can keep clicking and reading through or testing words as long as you like. Hitting 1-7 plus alt will regenerate the map with those difficulties toggled on or off (it shows which) and enter and escape open and close info menus and quizzes.
When typing quiz answers you may also type "help" or x to fill the entire word or a given number of letters, so help gives the whole word and xxxx would give the first 4 letters, xx gives the first 2, ect.
Finally, I absolutely plan on updating this project more in the future, improving the graphics with perhaps biome esque environments that you may click through, custom tile visuals or even a map editor to lay out certain words in certain places. Perhaps custom word sets, as well.
I also very much intend to expand the filtering to allow for only words of certain types, "school", "travel", "food", "art", ect, that would allow you to only see words that pertain to certain areas. This is more complex than it would seem though since my access to the words is limited to how I get them from the database and I can't just cross reference thousands of words on the fly.
That's the idea. Thanks for checking it out and feel free to send me suggestions or comments, making a language app is a learning experience for me as much as anyone.
Hope you enjoy it, see ya!
